The town was founded in Romans times, was the most important fortification of the area, Serving to defend the roman road that led from Florence to Siena.
Positioned between Siena and Florence , eternally fighting over the territory, San  Donato was frequently the scene of important events ,destroyed in 1289 by the Ghibellines of Arezzo was rebuilt with the typical protective wall encircling it.
The apartment is located in a portion of the original wall, it is considered the oldest building in town apparently dates back to the year 900.
The central part of the town is a perfect example of the medieval burg, with narrow streets winding up and down among the thirteenth century dwellings.

The Pieve di San Donato , just outside the walls of the town is a typical example of Romanesque architecture and dates back to 989. The baptismal font in glazed earthware as created by Giovanni della Robbia in 1513.
